Big Picture
Come January – it is here – The
Happy Slam as they call it. On
Monday, the 16th of January, the
Centenary edition of the Open
Down Under will commence to kick
start a new season of tennis -
one which we all await with much
anticipation. The professional
tennis circuit serendipitously
struck gold in moving the
Australian Open to January in
1987. Despite much ado over
scheduling and talks about a
more gradual build up to the
slam, the Australian Open,
somewhat abruptly beginning the
new year does lend a certain
impetus to the tennis season.
The slam is much awaited in the
aftermath of the brief off
season and the blue plexicushion
courts and the Rebound Ace that
preceded it have tended to throw
up more than their fair share of
glorious memories. Last year of
course they were a springboard
for a Novak Djokovic magnum opus
while Clijsters left deserving
the title Aussie Kim. The pair
returns this year to defend
their titles with a host of
challengers gunning to stop
them.

Novak Djokovic came in to
Australia last year very much
the hunter despite leading
Serbia to an immensely
satisfying victory in the Davis
Cup in the finale of 2010. This
year though the Serb has a giant
sized bulls eye painted bright
on his chest as he walks in the
undisputed world No.1 with every
single ATP player out there
gunning for him. The two time
champion will this year attempt
to join Wilander, Agassi and
Federer as the only players to
have won thrice or more here in
the Open era. The Serb does come
in an odds on favourite, showing
a renewed vigour and freshness
in clinically winning the warmup
exhibition event in Abu Dhabi.
He however now warily eyes a
chasing pack that is snapping at
his heels in an increasingly
motivated effort ot chase him
down. Rafael Nadal has added
weight to his racquet to power
up his game. Federer has
mentally revitalised himself and
is unbeaten since the US Open
last year. Andy Murray has hired
legendary Ivan Lendl to coach
him to a first slam crown
beginning in right earnest with
victory in Brisbane.
While these men remain the key
contenders, a new layer of
threat has emerged. Jo-Wilfred
Tsonga is finally imposing his
big man’s game with consistency
carrying over his late season
form into 2012 winning in Qatar.
Monfils pulled off a whirlwind
demolition of Nadal enroute to
the Doha final while ATP
newcomer of the year Milos
Raonic brewed a storm of his own
winning in Chennai without
dropping serve. Throw in the
consistency of David Ferrer, the
dynamite that hasn’t quite
returned to explosive best yet –
Juan Martin Del Potro and ever
improving youngsters Dolgopolov
and Tomic into the mix and one
has quite the smorgasbord to
pick from in Melbourne.
The distaff side see a battle of
a different kind in the offing.
Their top ranked player Caroline
Wozniacki isn’t nearly as secure
as the ATPs best. Instead the
WTA player of the year is the
2nd ranked hunter Petra Kvitova.
Wozniacki won 6 tournaments last
year as did Kvitova. Petra
however won Wimbledon, the year
ending championships in Istanbul
and led her country to Fed Cup
glory. This year the two faced
off in the Hopman Cup – Kvitova
edged her rival in a tight
contest. It set up the fantastic
chase to the top ranking with
less than 300 points between the
two. However just as we began to
settle on an order, we were
dealt a defiant reminder that it
is far from a 2 horse race. Last
year Li Na became the first
Asian woman to reach the final
of a major at the Australian
Open (She later became the first
to win at the French). After a
hangover that lasted the second
half of the season she sprung to
life defeating Kvitova in Sydney
while Wozniacki’s chances remain
clouded with a wrist injury
contributing to a quarterfinal
loss in Sydney. Meanwhile 3rd
ranked Victoria Azarenka remains
a threat reaching the title
round in Sydney due to play Li
on the morrow. Throw in US Open
winner and home girl Sam Stosur,
crowd favourite Maria Sharapova
and the dangerous troika of
Zvonareva, Radwanska & Bartoli
we have ourselves a right riot
in the women’s draw
Not all however is hunky dory
going into the Australian Open.
The walking wounded heading into
Melbourne, are surprisingly high
for this time of the year.
Already Nadal has publicly
announced that he will take a
month off to work on his left
shoulder. The distaff side have
it worse with Caroline Wozniacki,
Kim Clijsters & Serena Williams
all in the doctor’s chambers
with an injured wrist, a
sprained ankle and hip spasms
respectively. 10th ranked Andrea
Petkovic who ousted Sharapova
last year withdrew with a stress
fracture in the lower back and
Sharapova herself hasn’t played
a match since Istanbul where she
was hampered with an ankle
injury any case. Even the ultra
durable Roger Federer strained
his back in Doha withdrawing
from a tournament for only the
second time in his career.
Federer has started training in
Melbourne however and the others
too would be doing all they can
to get set for the 2012 curtain
raiser.
The Indian challenge sees a
juggling of pairs as the new
Indian Express chugs into town -
having split ways with Leander
Paes at the end of last year,
Mahesh Bhupathi now enters the
main draw with Rohan Bopanna.
Leander who got off to a
wonderful start winning in
Chennai with Tipsarevic now
pairs up with future regular
partner Radek Stepanek for the
Australian Open. Sania Mirza,
who has now dropped out of the
top 100, returns to the site
where she first made a name for
herself putting up a sterling
display against Serena back in
2005. Somdev Devvarman will
though sadly miss out on the
Open due to a shoulder injury.
All things said and done, it
promises to be a fascinating two
weeks in Melbourne as the
players compete for reward and
glory. The players will be
competing for prize money of a
whopping 2.3million AUD for the
singles winner with the runners
up totting up the 7 figure mark
too at 1.15million AUD. The
doubles winners share AUD
454,500 with the mixed winners
earning AUD 135,500 for their
efforts.
